PMS depression

Good morning everyone!

So this is a question about PMS , since I've now got a non hormonal form of birth control (copper IUD) I'm now experiencing my cycle naturally for the first time since I was a very young teenager.

I've written before about how these changes have been affecting me and I've been learning about the cycle and everything that comes with it as my body gets used to having a cycle.

One thing I've noticed seems to happen every month during PMS is I get very depressed and cry a lot. I know that it is normal to feel sad and depressed during PMS , my question is can anything be done to alleviate this? Is there anything you do during this time that has worked to help your mood?

This happens to me every single month; I already live with depression, but PMS kicks it into an extreme. I usually battle it with St John's Wort, since I am no longer on hormonal bc either, and then take daily Vitamin B and Iron so my fatigue doesn't compound the problem. Coffee also helps, honestly--a cup in the morning and one in the afternoon helps me feel sharp enough to deal with shit, and treats my PMS headaches.

I can't survive that week without coffee, I'm definetly with you there! I've heard about St John's wort years ago, but I remember looking it up and finding out it interacts with the pill so I never tried it. I'll have to get some and give it a try. Do you take it all month or only during PMS ?

I started taking it just during PMS, but now that I am not on HBC, I take it daily--or try to. I am really bad about remembering to take any pills, but I do my best. I think it's helpful!

Exercise... dark chocolate... locking myself in for an evening of chick flicks so I at least feel like I'm not crying over nothing, lol. Sobbing at my boyfriend "I DON'T KNOW WHY I'M CRYING!!" while he pats me on the shoulder sometimes helps.

Lol I can totally relate with the crying to my boyfriend thing! He says he feels like I hate him during my PMS week! I try to keep my emotions under control but it feels like It's nearly impossible.

For me, if I can take a B-complex vitamin (on top of a regular multi-vitamin) every day, then it helps my PMS depression a lot. It took about 2 months to start having an effect.

Some people do get more irritable on B supplements, so you may want to get a blood test and see if you just routinely have low or low-normal B.

Good luck! PMS depression sucks. (And if I miss my B vitamins enough times in the month... I get more depression. *sigh*) It's also possible that yours is stronger than mine, or doesn't respond to B, but it might be worth a try.

i highly recommend looking into vitex / chase tree berry tincture or capsules. i take a herbal pms supplement daily that makes allllll the difference, especially after a few cycles of consistent use (mine has some st. johns wort in it too). dong quai is another good pms herb - you can usually find a decent combo formula at the health food store but vitex i find is super key for mood. also yes b vitamins - especially B6 and also magnesium glycinate is a good mineral for stress, cramping, etc.
