Ectopic Pregnancy

Feeling pretty down. I just want to share my story and see if anyone has any advice.

I had my Paragard IUD inserted in September 2012. Aside from heavier periods and worse cramps, I had no problems with it. I was so thankful to finally get it since I am really not interested in hormonal birth control methods and was tired of dealing with condoms.

On December 6 I got some cramps unlike I had ever felt before, and got kind of freaked out, but chalked it up to having some stomach issues. I kept having cramps every few days, but my period was supposed to come around December 15 so it all seemed normal. On December 15 I was up all night with bad stomach pains, but they subsided to an ache by the night of the 16th. On the 17th I got extremely worried since I still didn't have my period, and I was having some of the symptoms on a page I read on ectopic pregnancy, so I took a test. The result? Yeah, pregnant.

I went to the emergency room and had an ultrasound. They said my tube had already ruptured and I had internal bleeding. They said I had to have surgery and there was a good chance they would not be able to save the tube and possibly the ovary. I was terrified - I am 25 and married and do want kids someday. Even though I know (and they said) the IUD was not the cause, I was panicked before surgery and told them to take it out while they were in there.

Miraculously they were able to save my tube and ovary. My surgeon was shocked. I feel so lucky but I'm kind of regretting getting the IUD removed. I felt like I would be freaking out about an ectopic pregnancy every month if I kept it in, but I don't really know where to go from here. My husband is fine with using condoms (I really do not want to go the HBC route, but I'm pondering it) but I went through so much pain and money to get that thing I just feel stupid. My insurance is better now so I could possibly get another one inserted for less money but 1. I really don't want to deal with the pain again and 2. it kind of makes me angry that I had no pregnancy scares when using condoms for years, but I had an ectopic pregnancy after having the IUD for ONE. I would also like to try for a baby in a year or two so I don't know if it's worth it for only that long. I'm still recovering and probably not thinking clearly but yeah. That's my story.

How do you know if your IUD is dislodged / being expelled

I made this post simply because I'm unsure of/don't know what I'd ever have to expect if this ever happened. I also check my strings regularly, being able to touch the cervix entry and the strings usually feel the same length they always have..unless it's around the time of my period and they go from shorter to longer and then back to my usual.
After sex with my boyfriend yesterday, which was a little rougher than normal, I found just a little blood in my underwear a few hours later with only a few mild cramps (this could have just been post-sex cramps though because it sometimes happens...) Good news is that small amount of blood stopped last night, but my mind constantly is overthinking, and since we didn't use a condom for the majority of the time, of course I'm worrying a little because there's always those what-ifs and we almost always use a condom.. like what if my IUD is dislodged now, making it ineffective when I needed it? (although he still didn't finish inside me)
How do you know it's being expelled by the strings? Will there be an insane amount of string curled up there? Will the cramps be excruciating? Will I be gushing blood?

I simply just don't know what I'd expect if it was dislodged or in the process of being expelled.
I haven't gotten my IUD checked at all since it was inserted in March so hopefully can schedule an appointment soon to make sure everything is okay..
