Mirena 6-Week Update

I posted 6 weeks ago about my insertion and I had said I would update after about a month. I suppose it's a couple weeks overdue.

So far, things seem to be working out fine. I had a few cramps the first week, a couple that were more moderate than mild but easily managed with Pamprin. I had a lot of bloating and felt like a whale for a few weeks (I'd say the first 3 weeks) but that's resolved itself.

So, the main points:

This was something I was really worried about since my Implanon caused me to gain weight and I couldn't seem to lose it, even with trying to eat well and exercising 3-4 times a week. Since the switch 6 weeks ago, I decided to get more strict and use MyFitnessPal to track my food intake and exercise and I've stuck to this pretty well. Even with a one week semi-break due to a destination wedding I attended in Hawaii, I have lost 6 pounds so far with diet and exercise, something I wasn't able to do with Implanon. Now, I do realize that I am trying even harder now to lose weight and I'm being very methodical about it, so I don't think the weight loss is *because* of the Mirena, so much as the Mirena isn't keeping me from losing weight like the Implanon seemed to do. I didn't have a miraculous weight loss from just switching and not changing my habits. I do still have a small pouch of belly fat but I want to continue the diet and exercise plan for a while longer before I make any judgments against Mirena for that.

As I said before, I had horrible bloating for first 2-3 weeks but it did eventually go away.

My first Mirena period came right on time, exactly 4 weeks after my last period ended (I got the Mirena when I was on that period). I did experience a couple more pimples that were easily controlled with my normal facial cleansing routine the week before and bloating 2-3 days before I started seeing the spotting. Once the spotting started, I got a few cramps the first day, nothing horrible and all were short bursts that, while a little breath taking, passed so quickly that I didn't need to take any medication for pain. I'm on day 4 of the period and it's a normal flow and I don't really notice any cramping. I keep being paranoid about using tampons though, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. I'm just extra careful when I change the tampon out. Otherwise, it's been pretty textbook, my cervix is lower and softer, I can easily check my strings where as before it was harder to, no change in sting length or placement and all seems well.

No real change except what I mentioned before about getting a few pimples the week before I started my period.

Sex drive has definitely increased but I'm not exactly a sex craved bunny. It's a nice balanced sex drive which I appreciate. My boyfriend can't feel the strings during sex at all and we've had no issues before, during or after sex with the IUD. He actually has helped me check on the strings the one or two times I couldn't feel them because my cervix was too high.

I'm very pleased with how things are going so far. I had a follow up appointment the day before thanksgiving. My only worry these days it having a tampon accidentally pull out the IUD but again, I've been trying to be careful and from what I can tell my strings are still nicely tucked up where my doctor put them initially so it should not be an issue.

Hoping that everything continues to go smoothly.

can't get new IUD because of bacterial vaginosis?

6 weeks ago I had to get my Paragard removed.  (It had moved too low in uterus and was causing me to bleed heavily continuously after i had had it for 2 years).

They did a culture after it was removed and found I had bacterial vaginosis (BV).  I have heard of IUDs causing this, but this is the first time in my life I have ever had it.  I was not having any symptoms.  They gave me antibiotics to take for a week.

Fast forward to now- I had an appointment to get a new IUD (Skyla this time).  Cultures were done prior to insertion as per protocol.  Again, I am having no symptoms but the cultures show I have BV again!  The doctor won't put in the IUD until it is gone.  They gave me more antibiotics and I am going to get some probiotics.

I am so frustrated because I don't know how I am getting this recurrent problem.  I am not sexually active at the moment and haven't been for quite some time (only getting the new IUD because I might not have insurance after the 1st of the year and I do plan on having sex again at some point in my life:).  I keep clean "down there."  I have never had an STD or any other infection other than the occasional yeast infection or UTI.

I don't understand that if IUDs can cause BV, why I can't get one put in BECAUSE OF  BV.  Can it cause PID? Anyone else have experience with this?
