Suddenly Having Periods on Mirena?

Hello All!

I have been lurking and reading posts from this community for a while. What a helpful place! Anyway, I have started having something that I am not sure is an issue and I have tried to research it on the internet, but I am not coming up with much.

Recently, I have notice that my strings feel longer...a lot longer however, I don't feel the plastic tips so I don't think that it is coming out. I have had Mirena for two years on October 4. I had a LOOOONG period of bleeding after insertion (October-April) and when it stopped I didn't have a period at all until last month. I suddenly started getting terrible symptoms and cramping and I had a period. I wondered if maybe it was a fluke, but here I am exactly one month later and I am having another one. It appears as though I have gone from no periods to having regular ones.  Has anyone experienced this? Could my device be ineffective now? I am trying to get into my OBGYN, but there are no appointments available for a while and I was just curious if anyone has had this problem. As a bit of background information, I do have PCOS and have recently lost about 50 lbs. Thanks to any and all for any answers!

5 week Mirena checkup

Hi everyone,
I have been helped so much by everyone's posts that I just had to join and post my so far positive Mirena experience.

I am 40, no children, and the insertion was a bit painful but deep breathing helped. Drove myself home from the appointment and was just a bit crampy that night. Had taken an Aleve before the insertion and took another when I got home, driving myself home was fine. Spotted for maybe a day or two. Waited about 4 days for sex with my husband and that was fine, he had no string issues and neither did I :)

Have had one period since and bleeding was very light, used a few tampons and had no issues with those.

Had my 5 wk checkup with my gyn yesterday and that was good as well, he had already done an ultrasound right after insertion to check placement, so yesterday he just visually looked at the strings and did a pelvic. The pelvic was slightly uncomfortable when he pressed on my abdomen from the outside with his fingers inside but it was uneventful. When I got home I had a few cramps so I took an Aleve and all was well again.

Knock on wood, looking forward to 5 uneventful Mirena years!

Skyla IUD - Update & Questions Compared to BCP

Hello IUD Divas,

A little background on me... I am 22 years old, never been pregnant, and in a long-term monogamous relationship. Prior to the IUD, I've been on the pill since I was 16. Started with Loestrin Fe 1/20 for most of the years, Microgestin FE 1/20, Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo (couldn't stand it, had migraines), back to Microgestin FE 1/20, and then Gildess FE 1/20. The pill has been okay to me -- no acne, no cramps, but no libido and weight gain. My period was pretty much super light or didn't come.

Since I'm in a steady relationship, my sister recommended me to try out the IUD. At a previous pap smear, my cervix was so small that they had to get a pap smear done a second time to get cells. It made me worried that the insertion would either be painful or not fit. I was really nervous when I went in to get the Skyla yesterday, but it was over and done with quickly. It was more uncomfortable and pressure than actual pain. I had minor cramping/discomfort for the rest of the day and feel okay this morning.

My question is for those who have previously been on BCP for a significant amount of time and then switched over to a hormonal IUD. How long did it take for the BCP to completely leave your system? Differences between a pill and localized hormones? What were the side effects? Your weight/mood/libido compared from BCP to an IUD?

Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you :)

Blood pregnancy tests- how soon after sex?

Hey ladies,

I'm trying to find some definitive information on this. Does anyone know how long after sex(had unprotected sex/no pulling out 11 days after Mirena insertion. Haven't had a period since insertion, so doc is willing to a blood test, just to be safe). Thinking of going in tomorrow, which would be 19 days after sex. Any thoughts? Thanks!!
