Period on Mirena? Also, how long to get pregnant?

Hello Divas!  This is my first post, so I will get to my point quickly, then give some background information - and keep it short (which is not a strength of mine...  lol)

Has anyone ever had a heavy period after long-time Mirena use where you had no period?

So a little background about me, I'm 32 years old (divorced, and now engaged- big day is June 22, Woohoo!) and I have 3 fantastic kids (13, 11 & 9) and I had my first Mirena IUD inserted on my birthday (yay that was fun) back in 2005.  I had it removed and and a new one placed in December of 2010, and I still have that one in place.  I'm also a bad panda, and don't check my strings much.  It's really hard for me to feel them.  I know, it's not ok, but just seems like if something was going to go wrong, it would have happened a long time ago, ya know?  I was really good about it for the first year or so...

Anyways, I am one of the lucky ones who doesn't have a period.  :)  Before Mirena, I was a super-plus tampon user, but thankfully I wasn't a member of the super-crampy ultra-PMSy crowd, so I have no room to complain.  After insertion (the first time) I had the standard 2 month period (no fun, no fun, no fun) and gradually, my periods faded in the months after that.  Most of the time, I will spot once a monthish, and I will notice it after using the restroom.  "Oh, look, it's my period," then I will ignore it.  (It's light enough to just wipe away.)  Once in awhile I'll have an actual period, lasting 3 days or so.  I bought a value pack of tampons back in 2009 when I moved, I'd say the box is still 3/4 full.  :)  So very, very rarely do I need them.

So I'm having my period, and it sucks.  The longest period I've ever had on my IUD was 3 days, and I'm on day 4 now.  It isn't super heavy; I'm using regular tampons.  I'm not really worried, but I am curious.  I am in no pain - other then my grumpy fiance, who is not used to being denied his naughty-time, lol.  BTW, he thinks it's icky/messy, not I.

So, I suppose my question is WHY is this happening?  I've done a little research, but I can't seem to come up with any definitive answers.  Why it goes away is an easy answer, but why the weird once-in-a-blue-moon period?

Also, a question about pregnancy.  My fiance and I want to have a baby together in the future.  (He isn't quite ready yet though.  Suddenly becoming a father of 3 was a bit of a shock to his system, lol.)  So I was curious, has anyone had their IUD removed so they could conceive, and if so, how long did it take?  I've read a little online, but I'd love to hear someone's personal experience.  :)

Thanks for reading.  I'm glad this community is here.  :)
