So, I got my Mirena inserted in March 2011. The insertion itself was quick, but incredibly painful. After the initial insertion pain, I had pretty rockin' cramps for the rest of the day (lot's of ibuprofen and ice cream helped) but the next day I woke up and felt pretty normal.
The first year was pretty great - no periods, no mood swings, no symptoms at all. After about a year I started to develop really awful PMS, with really out of control mood swings, depression, and irritability.. something I never had on the pill.
After about a year and a half I started to get non-stop cramps.. sometimes mild and sometimes really bad. They would come and go, and at some point I had a period. The cramps continued on and off and sometimes to the point where I couldn't get out of bed. I finally went to the doctor (in London) to get it checked out. At the clinic, the doctor confirmed I likely had a cyst, and recommended I get it checked out by ultrasound. I returned home to the middle east, and sort of put the ultrasound plans on the back burner when my cramps started to improve.
Well, a couple weeks ago the cramps flared up again - and this time they were REALLY non-stop and sometimes quite painful. I finally found a doctor where I live, and got checked out again, this time with the ultrasound.
The doctor gave me and ultrasound, found the cyst, but told me it was only about 4cm and therefore not dangerous. However, he told me there was a lot of inflammation around the IUD and possibly some sort of infection or bacteria. He told me the IUD would have to come out, as it was surely the reason for all the pain and cramps. Not sure if he was just a bit of a fear-mongerer or what but he said if I left it in, I might not be able to have children in the future.
So - it came out. That was painless (in fact I didn't feel a thing) but followed by cramping (which went away after a while). The most painful part was the injection I had to get in my butt.. ow!!
Since then, I haven't had any issues with cramps... thank goodddd. I've had some sort of bleeding, possibly a period over the last week, and I'm planning to get back on the pill soon.
I'm pretty bummed out about the whole thing, as I really loved my Mirena! The raging PMS was worth the 99.9% accuracy and lack of periods. :(
Not sure why it didn't work out for me, but maybe I'll give it a try again in the future.
Now, my question is - can I start taking the pill right away? Will it be effective? Should I wait a bit?
