My obgyn told me no sex for 3 days after getting my Mirena and to use a condom for 2 weeks to make sure I don't get preggers. welllll four days in, had sex and we tried to use a condom, but it just didn't work. I have used them before obvi, but not with my current bf and we both hate them.  oops. anyways, he pulled out and everything, what do you think the chances of me getting pregnant are? that would just be so painfully ironic.

What were you on before? If you were previously on HBC and you had no break between it and the Mirena, your ovaries are still entranced by hormones. If you were not on HBC, PP told me that it takes a week to be effective.

That said, the Mirena's primary method is NOT by stopping ovulation. In fact, that doesn't always happen. The physical presence in your uterus causes an immune response, which kills sperm. The hormones also create a cervical plug (blocking sperm) and thin your uterine lining (discouraging implantation).

Are you within the 72 hour window for emergency contraception? I hope the physical presence is enough to protect you, but you may want to consider, well, Plan B.

Wait, he pulled out? As in, you used withdrawal accurately to the best of your knowledge? No semen in or very near the vagina, all that?

Then you're at much less risk than I intimated above! Carry on!

What? My gyno didn't tell me that- she just basically said whenever I felt comfortable. Crap. Crap, crap, crap.

Mine told me that because the IUD needs to get fully settled. She never mentioned anything about pregnancy.

From Planned Parenthood:

The ParaGard IUD is effective immediately.

The Mirena IUD is effective immediately if inserted within seven days after the start of your period. If you have Mirena inserted at any other time during your menstrual cycle, use another method of birth control like a condom, female condom, or spermicide if you have vaginal intercourse during the first week after insertion. Protection will begin after seven days.

...but my gyno said it was effective immediately. Of course, she did know I'd just had my period, so maybe this is why she said it.

Mirena's a form of HBC and is thus subject to the same rules: effective immediately if inserted on the first day of your period, otherwise not considered fully effective until seven days have passed. That being said, withdrawal is nearly as effective as condoms (96% vs. 98% over the course of a year being used perfectly), so I don't think you're at any more risk than you would have been had you followed the doctor's orders.

Hi there,
I had the same thing happen, got the Mirena at 7 weeks post partum (so DEFINITELY didn't want to get pregnant again!!) asked how long I had to wait until I had sex again, ob said "as soon as you feel like it--you'll be bleeding today but whenever you're up to it go for it!" so two days later we did. (It had been a long, LOONNNGGG time due to a difficult pregnancy and I was ready! :) )
That weekend I did some reading and saw the PP 7 day recommendation. I called my ob FRANTIC that I had made some horrible mistake. She reassured me we were fine, and likened it to the ibuprofen bottle that said a recommended doseage but I knew that docs often prescribed significantly more than that and people were just fine. That it was a legal thing as it didn't necessarily stop ovulation and that the hormones started flowing right away.
I did not get pregnant and am still not. Thank heavens!

I'll just add that I was NOT on my period when it was initially inserted, had just finished it about a week prior to insertion.
